This Pink Poodle is by far the coolest new perennial I've seen for 2009. Klehm's Song Sparrow always has some great new plant offerings. Pink Poodle resembles a cactus Dahlia with 4" bright pink flowers.
when you order this does it come as a little plantling? like how big would it grow in one summer? is a perennial the kind that you have to plant every year? do you dig it up and replant it? should i get one or more? sick of my questions yet?
Yes, it comes as a plantling - in a 2 qt. pot. Klehm's is very careful to wrap and box it so it arrives safely on your doorstep. It grows to 32" tall and 30" wide. Not sure how much it'd grow in one summer. Usually this company says it'll reach the full size in 5 to 8 years but I don't see anything specific here. (I've pasted the link info here). A perennial is the type that you plant once and it comes back every year as long as it's the right zone. Minneapolis is zone 4 or 5 if you're daring. No need to dig it up, unless you want to move it to a different spot or divide it a couple years later to make two plants from your original. It's nice to do that, then you save money and have something to look forward to. I think it's so pretty you should get a couple. It's nice to repeat colors around your garden. Then you can divide in a couple years and have four plants. This plant would be great for cut flowers too. Generally, the more flowers you cut from a plant, the more buds it sends up to flower. So you really are getting more flowers this way.
Never sick of questions from my biggest garden fan!
Genus/Common Name: Echinacea/Coneflower
Size: 28"-32" tall x 24"-30" wide
Plant zone(s): 4-8
Price: $17.95, 3 for $50.00
Light Requirements: full sun/partial shade
Container Size: 2.06qt/1.95L
Resembling a cactus Dahlia, these fully double, amazingly large 4" flower heads have a multitude of bright rosy-pink florets emanating from a reddish-yellow center. Blooms gradually reflex with age and are long lasting. Strong well branched stems, excellent vigor, and healthy foliage. Different from other doubles!
